Useful information on the safe use of underfloor heating:
If we use floor heating in terrariums (heating mats, heating cables, etc.), we must ensure optimal conditions for the operation of these heating systems. Make sure that the heat does not accumulate near the source, but is conducted inside the terrarium. From below, terrariums are mostly insulated by the mat on which they stand (e.g. part of the furniture), so the heat cannot go down. To allow the heat to penetrate the terrarium, we need to choose the right substrate. However, not all underlying substrates are suitable for this purpose, as they retain heat. In particular, substrates based on crushed wood, Vermiculite etc. insulate very well. Their plump consistency with the amount of air in the substrate further enhances this effect. These substrates must not be used with underfloor heating. The only suitable ones are soil-based substrates and sand.
In general, a dry substrate has far better insulating properties than a wet substrate and that a heavy, compact substrate such as sand or soil it distributes the heat well to the required surfaces.
