Bromelain is a plant enzyme obtained from the stems of ripe pineapples (Ananas comosus). Its main ability is to block mediators of inflammation and reduce the migration of neutrophils to the site of inflammation. It participates in the breakdown of proteins, helps reduce swelling and heal wounds, and has an effect on the clotting of blood platelets. Bromelain also improves the absorption and effectiveness of other substances.

Papain is a plant enzyme obtained from the latex that is secreted by the papaya fruit (Carica papaya) after cutting the unripe fruit. Hydrolytically cleaves peptides and proteins.
